This morning I woke up at 8am. After breakfast I collected all my stuff for this roadtrip to Bettel in Luxemburg. Once all my stuff was in my car, I went off at 10.15am. Going south. The first part the highway was really busy for a Sunday. After Nijmegen, the Netherlands, it was allright. Not too busy at all. Around 11.30am I was near Venray. Up there I made a stop for lunch at La Place. Once I was done, I went on with the journey. Going into Germany (Mönchengladbach, Koblenz and Trier). And finally going into Luxemburg. Final destination Bettel. Bettel is pretty close to the German border. At 3pm I was at the apartment I am staying during 6 nights. Pretty apartment. Across this apartment there is a field with at least 4 horses. Nice view. 😃 Not boring at all. Once I settled in, I had a tiny walk around the building. Back at the apartment, I had dinner. After that it was time to relax.

I was awake at 7.30am. But I got out of bed at 8.30am. Holiday, right? You go out bed whenever you want... 😁 Today is a sunny but chilly day. The sun is out all day. But the wind makes it colder. At least it doesn't rain. After breakfast I started with a walk around Bettel, Luxemberg. The road goes up and down. As the Netherlands is flat, going up and down takes you out of breath at some points. Anyway, it was really nice to walk around. At some points you will have great views over the area. Nature is blooming here and there. Also the trees are getting greener. Lovely views. I walked around 1,5 hours before going back to the apartment. Had lunch over there. Once I finished lunch, I went for a ride to Roth an der Our, Germany. First I went to Schloss Roth (castle). This Schloss is not open for public. It has privat owners. Allthough there is a wall around the building, you can see a bit of it above the walls and through the entrance. Next to this Schloss you will find Filialkirche St. Peter. Small church. Around the church there are several graves with gravestones on it. I find it peacefull to walk around/in a church. From this church you will have great views of the surrounding. Once I finished this little walk, I went on to find a mailbox. And I succeeded. Mailed several envelopes. Germany stamps are much cheaper then Dutch stamps. So, when I am near/in Germany, I have a stack of emvelopes to mail out. And back to the apartment to chill out.

Today I woke up at 8.30am. After breakfast it was time to go to Vianden, Luxemburg. First stop: Castle Vianden. I parked my car pretty close to the castle. You have to get a ticket for parking (max 5 hours). From the parking spot to the entrance of the castle it is pretty steep. Don't worry if you have to stop (or 2) to go breathing again. Lots of people have to do that. At the register you have to pay for the entrance. It is €13 for an adult. You will get a map of the castle what you will find where. Quite handy. Nothing to miss. You will see:
Bailey
Arms hall
Archeological crypt
Ancient kitchen
Lower chapel
Knights study
Inner courtyard
The surrounding walk and the upper chapel
Jemmy Koltz hall
Charles Arendt hall
Banqueting hall
Bedroom
Vic. Abens hall
Genealogy hall
Grand kitchen
Dining hall
Well
Knights hall
Bastion
Black tower
Wine cellar
The castle was built between the 11th and 14th century. It used to belong to the Royals. In 1977 the castle became in possession of the state Luxemburg. Now it is a monument.
It is really interesting to see how people used to live in a castle back in the days. After I finished the tour, I had lunch at the restaurant.
After the castle I went to the centre of the village Vianden. I had a walk around the village. I visited the museum of Victor Hugo. He was a writer (Les Miserable and Hunchback of the Notre Dame). There are some original furniture from the time of the writer. He used them as well. There are 3 floors dedicated about his life and work. Too bad it was only in French. But you will get an idea about his life and work as a writer.
Once finished the museum of Victor Hugo, I went to a place where you can take a chair lift up on a hill. You can get a one way ticket (you go up with this chair lift and go down walking or a bike). I got a return ticket for €9. It is a nice ride going up. Once up on the hill, you will have a great view over the village and the area. On a sunny day like today, you can look far away in the distance. Really nice up there! There is a restaurant where you can enjoy a drink/eat while watching the scenery.
After some time I went down. And back to the apartment to rest...

Today is a sloooow day. For some reason I didn't sleep well last night. I got out of bed at 9am. Slowly getting ready to do some grocery shopping in Körperich, Germany. About 10-15 minute car drive from Bettel, Luxemburg. Bought a few things. Then back to the apartment. Unload the groceries. It was time to have lunch. Around 1pm I did a car ride to Fouhren, Luxemburg. I parked the car near the church. From there I had small walk around Fouhren. Once I finished my walk I took the car back to the apartment to rest for the rest of the day. Nothing excited happening today.
All pictures are my own.
