Zandsculpturenfestijn Garderen, The Netherlands

Today (8 August 2022) I went to see the sand sculptures in Garderen.

The theme for this year is Our Patriotic History. You will go on a trip through history of the Netherlands. Important events and persons are made out of sand and displayed. Really impressive! Example: Royal Family, Bonaparte/France taking over in a war, WW1 & WW2, painter 👩‍🎨 like Van Gogh & Rembrandt and trading routes of the East Indian Company.

There where moments I thought: oh yeah, right, I forgot.

There is a group of about 30 people who will make these sculptures. First they make a big wooden box. In here goes the sand. Imported from the river Maas. Once ready, the wooden box goes off. Now it is ready to be carved into a sculpture. It takes several months to complete all the sculptures. A part of the sculptures are inside and a part is outside. The ones which are standing outside are protected by a layer of special glue. This will protect the sculpture from the weather (rain and wind).

You can make a puzzle while being here. This year you have to found the answers while walking along the scupltures. You can find the answers in the sculptures or lyrics by the sculptures. When you have all the answers, you should make a sentence for the puzzle.

In the holiday season (July and August) it can get really busy. Be patient while walking around. Also you need to patient when you get a meal in the restaurant.

All pictures shown are my own.

Picking blue berries, Ermelo, The Netherlands

Normally I would pick blue berries at the end of June/early July. But this year I didn’t had the time. Till today. Quite late in the season. There where a lot of people today. I tried my best, but it wasn’t the best amount I have harvested. Only 2.2 kilogram. On a good day I would pick double that amount. Anyway, at least I got something, right? 🤣😁🫐 After picking the berries, I had a cup of tea and a slice of cake with blue berry jam on it.

A part of the berries I made jam out of it. The rest will be eaten during the day(s).
